Ward Moretti is honoured to offer for sale The Pieter and Olga Dreesmann Collection of Works by Pablo Picasso, a remarkably balanced survey of 32 works on paper, unique ceramics and sculpture assembled over 25 years. As well as marking the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s death, the show celebrates Ward Moretti’s first anniversary and will be their inaugural exhibition.

The first presentation of The Pieter and Olga Dreesmann Collection of Works by Pablo Picasso will take place at Ward Moretti in London during Frieze Week [10-13 October], marking the first anniversary of the gallery with its inaugural exhibition. The collection will then travel to the newly opened Moretti Fine Art Paris where it will be on show during Paris+ par Art Basel [16-25 October] and then to New York to coincide with the November auctions [6-18 November]. Finally, the group will be displayed at Moretti Fine Art Monaco until the end of the year [7-22 December].

    Pieter and Olga Dreesmann

Pieter and French-Colombian Olga Ramos-Esteban, who were married in 2005, have worked closely together to build and shape their collections, sharing a passion for art. When in 2011 they decided against buying another Old Master painting and then, the following year, to sell their Old Master collection, they jointly agreed to focus thereafter on searching for works of special interest by Picasso. Not only have they assiduously attended many exhibitions and visited galleries featuring the artist’s work, they have studied different aspects of his development in detail. If they discovered a drawing or sculpture that held a particular fascination for them both, they discussed the possibility of a new acquisition with James Roundell, who usually acted on their behalf at auctions.

Since the first Picasso work entered their collection in 1997, Dutch collector Pieter Dreesmann and his wife Olga have worked closely with James Roundell to build and shape the collection. From early Blue, Rose and Cubist explorations to Neo-classicism, Surrealism and later periods of his career, the works in the collection date from 1899 to 1962 and cover the broad spectrum of Picasso's artistic evolution.

Pieter and Olga’s genuine passion and enthusiasm for Picasso has been at the heart of their attitude towards understanding and collecting his art. From the very beginning, according to James Roundell, the idea was to create a collection rather than to acquire separate, that is, unrelated works. Not only did they choose objects that were characteristic of Picasso and referred to the different stages of his life, but the techniques that the artist employed across a wide range of media were always taken into consideration. No matter what they selected, of prime importance was both the quality of the objects and also how any new acquisition might relate to works already in the collection.

Pieter and Olga Dreesmann said: “It has been a great pleasure collecting and living with these works over the past twenty-five years, as well as sharing them with the public through loans to exhibitions across Europe and the United States. Each of these objects holds special significance for us but we have decided now is the right time for others to have the opportunity to own and enjoy them as we begin a new chapter in our lives as collectors.”

  • "Picasso is one of the very few artists of whom it can be said that everything by him, from the merestscrawl to the mostelaborate drawing, bears in some degree the mark of his genius, because everything that he does, even addressing a letter, is done with total concentration.

This is what the artist means, when he says half seriously, half-jokingly: 'There is no such thing as a bad Picasso'."

    — John Richardson

  • "I first met Pieter Dreesmann in 1998 when I began working with James Roundell. From the very start it was clear how passionate Pieter was about each artwork he acquired. It was a great pleasure to then meet Olga and see that she shared the same distinct vision for the sustained quality and shape of the collection. Having witnessed how Pieter and Olga have nurtured this high calibre, scholarly collection with James Roundell’s insight and advice over the last 25 years, it is a privilege to now be entrusted with the sale of these rare and important Picassos to new, discerning collectors and institutions.

The Pieter and Olga Dreesmann Collection of Works by Pablo Picasso is a tribute to the artist’s outstanding creativity and the incredible diversity that defined his unparalleled oeuvre. It presents an extraordinary opportunity for collectors, museums, and art enthusiasts to acquire coveted pieces spanning eight decades that have rarely been seen by the public."
